The Clim-ATIC The Flashes of Genius Climate change adaptation innovation contest

Voting now closed
Well done to the winners Anton, Linuz and Marcus from Hedlunda School, Lycksele, with their invention the Air purifier 70

Entries from Hedlunda School, Kornvägen 6, 921 92 Lycksele

Entry 1    WINNER

"The Air purifier 70 takes in air at the front of a fan then go into the air in the filter holder. Which purified air from hazardous substances then go the clean air out. it works amazingly well and it is incredibly
clean!"

Inventors: Anton, Linuz and Marcus

Entry 2

"This year's hottest product!  Recycle paper, which is scribbled on when you put the paper in hand, it will come out on the lid and then it's blank.
It runs on air power.
So we recommend buying PAPER PAD MACHINE X 5000"

Inventors: Wilma and Emilia

Entry 3

The Rubbish Gatherer 9000

"To clean all the streets, you click just how long it will run before it turns.
It runs on sun light and is water proof.
It is environmentally friendly for the sucking up of trash in the streets and it will not emit any gas and it runs on renewable energy."

Inventors: Johan S, Edvin L.

Entry 4

"Slicks is a tricycle which can carry itself upon water. It´s called Slicks because it has slicks tires. If there would be a flood it can carry itself upon the water. It´s good because you can ride to school and friends.  It runs on greenhouse gas and then it cleans carbon to oxygen and you don´t need pedal."

Inventors: Emil Hedman 4N, Carl Ahlqvist 4N, Sanna Gustafsson 2S, Erik Holmgren 2S.
Entry 5

"ICE COOL
is a fan in outer space that takes into extra sun rays and take out cool air to the polar bears so that the ice doesn´t melt. The little fan take in the warm air and the big fan emits the cold air. Ice Cool is above the North Pole in space. It also helps us to not get so much heat on the earth. So that the earth receives its correct temperature."

Inventors:
Tiffani Söderholm 4N, Hanna Mouneimne 4N, Nina Lindholm 2S, Cassandra Jakobsson 4N

Entry 6

"Revatt is an abbreviation for the Swedish word purifying water. Its function is to absorb water and convert to portable water. Then it can transport water in the tanks to countries where it is dry it can help the environment where it is dry to the disappearance and quenches thirst families. Then they can try to start rearing their animals and get new stock. Revatt also has a control that can steer Revatt at large distances. It can radiate the rays to a satellite and down to Revatt so we can communicate with Revatt all over the earth. The control is powered by solar cells."

Inventors: Elias Zettervall 4N,  Oskar Lia Stadling 4N, Nils Hermansson 2S, Noomi Söderström 2S

Entry 7

This is a Laddinator. Its task is to charge electrical devices. You enter how far you go biking and type what it is to be charged with energy. The laddinator recharges through a cable that goes to the tire that spins to make electricity. It is good for the environment because it does not emit any exhaust gases and it goes on its own energy.

Inventors: Alicia From 4S, Meja Hermansson 4S, Therese Lindholm
Entry 8

This is a boat named Fleet. It is powered by water and is meant to be used during floods. It looks like a car but it is a boat. It has a large engine powered by water. Because there is so much water during floods, it is easy to get hold of the water. It is good for the environment because it does not run on petrol.

Inventors: Wilma Holmgren 4S, Vidar Axelsson 4S, Julina Renman 4S, Manfred Jansson 4S.

Entry 9

This is a boat propelled by air so that it moves on the water. It is powered by an electric motor and two propellers. It has two lights in the front, a black cab racing and there is a hold. It draws in exhaust gases and produces rather good air and then it will be a better environment for us to live in

Inventors: William Linder 4S,  Mohammed Al Sultan 4S, Lucas Björnestål 2N, Isabelle Lindholm 2N

Background information

Clim-ATIC is an EU-project where regions in Greenland, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Scotland cooperate in order to learn how to adapt to the effects that climate change is causing on a local and regional level.

The Flashes of Genius is a method/concept that has been used in Sweden for years in order to stimulate school children’s creativity through encouraging them to find new ideas and create new innovations for everyday problems. The method has been so successful that it received a national knowledge prize in 2009!

Together we are now hosting an exciting international competition where school children, ages 9-12 are asked to invent new innovations that will help solve the problems that climate change is causing. And we are hoping that your class would like to join us!

First prize is 200 Euros for the winner’s class to spend!

What is the method used?

Simply put:

The method/concept takes its starting point in looking at everyday innovations, for example a toaster. It is very simple to use and it is also free of charge. The children are asked to bring an everyday (non- toxic) , but broken innovation to school. Under the supervision of a teacher they dismantle the innovations into pieces.

In connection to the dismantling of innovations, the teacher has a class about climate change and climate change adaptation. Clim-ATIC has produced some information material that you are free to use for this purpose.

After the pupils have familiarised themselves with the innovations and climate change/ climate change adaptation, the pupils are introduced to the innovation competition. Their “mission” is to create new innovations that will be helpful to solve the problems of climate change and climate change innovations. Each class then chooses the 3 best innovations that they would like to put forward to the international competition, take pictures of them and describe in English what their purpose are, and send it in to Clim-ATIC. Clim-ATIC will open a webpage where everyone can vote for the best innovation on from 1st December 2010 to 11th December 2010. The winner will be announced on 15th December 2010.

How do I sign up?

There is no fee to enter the contest and the concept/ teacher’s manual is free of charge.

In order to participate and to receive the teacher’s manual for the competition, please send an e-mail with your name, the name of your class and school to:
