Demonstration adaptation project : A demonstration project to use waste from the fishing industry to create energy in the form of bio-gas or bio-oil Location: Uummannak , Greenland In most inhabited areas of the Arctic region the local, marine ecosystem is the primary source of food for the population. However, as a result of the production processes a considerable part of these resources is not utilized and is usually dumped into the ocean or is being burned on land. At the same time, many remotely located areas are provided with energy by way of fossil fuels, for which not only the burning but also the transportation has a negative impact on the environment and its supply is vulnerable to climate change. This project addresses both of these issues. Based on experience from
temperate regions the objective of the project is to further develop the
possibility of producing energy from biogenic waste from the fishing industry
mixed with domestic household waste (so called black waste water). The
demonstration project will focus on the use of the kind of waste available in
Uummannaq in North Greenland, which currently include the Greenland halibut and
The output of the project will be a small-scale, portable plant, primarily based in Uummannaq, but with parts constructed, tested and documented at ARTEK and at Nutaaliorfik. In addition, the project will result in scientific publications as well as education and training of university students and local technicians.
